CBD Basics
Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system is a system of physiology that aids the body in maintaining homeostasis from birth. Every mammal has an Endocannabinoid system and it promotes general well-being.
The human body produces its own cannabinoids, such as 2-Arachidonoyl(2-AG) and Anandamide(AEA), and when they are produced within the body they are termed endocannabinoids.
The endocannabinoid system is the network of receptors that interact with cannabinoids; CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain, and CB2 is located throughout the immune system.
The human body, naturally producing cannabinoids, has endocannabinoid receptors — CB1 and CB2.
CB1 receptors are mainly found in the brain and are responsible for dealing with pain, movement coordination, cognitive abilities (thinking, memory), appetite and emotions. CB1 is actually the most numerous receptor expressed in the human brain.
CB2 receptors are more commonly found in the immune system and have an effect on pain and inflammation. The CB2 receptor is primarily localized in the peripheral aspect of the body (i.e. GI tract, tonsils, spleen, immune cells).
Both receptors serve major roles in homeostasis and biofeedback mechanisms.
When CBD enters the body, it stimulates the body to create more of its own endocannabinoids, producing the beneficial effects seen in so many people.
Types of CBD
Full Spectrum- A whole plant extract containing everything the hemp plant contains including the .3 THC. Even though it is a very small amount of THC, it will most likely cause a positive drug test when used consistently over time. The .3 THC is not enough to be psychoactive or mind altering but it can help the CBD to work better with the “entourage effect.”
Broad Spectrum- Contains everything from the hemp plant except the .3 THC. This is best if passing a drug test necessary. Some products contain an isolate and terpenes for different effects or to prevent tolerance build up.
Isolate- Contains just the CBD compound only. When only an isolate is used regularly a tolerance can build up in 20 to 30 days. Isolates are great for short term use or to supplement with another CBD regimen.
